Al Isra’ Wal Mi’raj (27th Day)

The Night Journey and Ascension

The Night Journey and Ascension, or Isra and Mi’raj, is a significant event in the month of Rajab. It occurred on the 27th of Rajab, when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) travelled from Makkah to Jerusalem on a miraculous creature called Buraq, described as larger than a donkey but smaller than a mule and capable of immense speed. From Jerusalem, he ascended to the heavens and met Allah (SWT).

During this journey, Allah (SWT) initially commanded 50 daily prayers for Muslims. After consulting with Prophet Musa (AS), Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) repeatedly asked for a reduction, eventually bringing the number down to five daily prayers.

Rajab – A Sacred Month

Rajab, the seventh month of the Islamic calendar, is one of the four sacred months in Islam, along with Muharram, Dhul Qada, and Dhul Hijjah. Good deeds performed during these months are especially rewarded, and bad deeds carry greater weight. Hence, Muslims are encouraged to increase their acts of worship and avoid sinful behaviour.

Giving Charity in Rajab

While charity is important throughout the year, it holds special significance in Rajab. Acts of kindness, such as visiting the elderly, caring for the sick, sponsoring orphans, or giving Sadaqah (charity), are highly encouraged.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).” (Muslim).
