What is Tarawih? Tarawih constitutes a voluntary (nafl) night prayer observed solely during Ramadan. Given its status as a highly recommended Sunnah, mosques globally conduct congregational Tarawih prayers every night throughout this auspicious month.
How many rak’at are in Tarawih? A rak’ah represents a unit of prayer, involving standing, reciting Qur’an, bowing, standing again, and prostrating. Tarawih comprises sets of two rak’at, akin to a regular voluntary prayer.
Various narrations differ on the total rak’at count for Tarawih, with some suggesting 8 rak’at and others 20 rak’at. In mosques, the imam typically leads the full 20 rak’at prayer, supported by all four schools of thought.
When should I perform Tarawih? Tarawih is offered during the night, anytime following the obligatory ‘Isha prayer. However, it’s important not to delay Tarawih until after the Witr prayer, as Witr signifies the final prayer of the night.
Since Tarawih is a night prayer, it must be completed before the break of dawn (Fajr). It’s permissible to rest after ‘Isha and awaken later during the night to engage in Tarawih prayer.
The Messenger of Allah (saw) said, ‘Our Lord Almighty descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of every night, saying, “Who is calling upon Me that I may answer him? Who is asking from Me that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him?“’ [Bukhari]
