Missed Prayer (Qada)

What to do about missed prayers, with the established evidence and Hanafi details labelled separately.

If a prayer is missed through sleep or forgetfulness

The authentic instruction is direct: if a person sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, they pray it when they remember.

Sahih al-Bukhari 597
Sahih Muslim 684c

If prayers were deliberately missed

Hanafi / four-school position: Deliberately missing an obligatory prayer is a grave sin requiring sincere repentance. The established four Sunni schools require the missed fard prayers to be made up as well. This page follows that position.

Someone with many missed prayers can make a reasonable estimate and work through them consistently. A practical Hanafi intention is simply to identify that the prayer is a makeup and which prayer it is—for example, “the earliest Dhuhr I owe” or “the latest Fajr I owe.”

How many rakʿahs?

PrayerFard to make up
Fajr2
Dhuhr4
Asr4
Maghrib3
Isha4

In the Hanafi school, missed Witr is also made up.

When can a qada prayer be prayed?

In Hanafi fiqh, makeup prayers can generally be performed when prayer is permitted, while the well-known prohibited times still need to be avoided. If you have a complex backlog or are unsure how to schedule it around current prayers, follow a reliable Hanafi scholar’s plan.

Source note: The basic rule on making up a missed prayer is anchored here in Sahih al-Bukhari 597 and Sahih Muslim 684.
