Transliteration symbols

Why some English letters have a line or dot — and how Beginner transliteration simplifies them.

Precise transliteration uses special marks to distinguish Arabic sounds that ordinary English spelling cannot show clearly. On the Salah guides you can switch to Beginner transliteration if these marks make learning harder.

ḥح, distinct from ordinary hh

The simplified spelling is a learning aid, not a substitute for hearing correct recitation. Use the Arabic and audio together where available.
